THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS

OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

Let every man use all his influence and property to remove this people to the place where the Lord shall locate a stake of Zion.

And if ye do this with a pure heart, in all faithfulness, ye shall be blessed; you shall be blessed in your flocks, and in your herds, and in your fields, and in your houses, and in your families.

Young Men Lesson 4: Companionship of the Holy Ghost

09:12 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

Let us make it a part of our everyday striving to open our hearts to the Spirit.

Manual 2; Supplement from ''Opening Our Hearts''
by Gerald N. Lund

Today I should like to speak on the importance of opening our hearts to the Holy Spirit.

After baptism we are confirmed and given the Holy Ghost. This is a supernal gift. The Holy Ghost comforts, teaches, warns, enlightens, and inspires us. Nephi put it very simply: "If ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do."1 We need the help of the Holy Ghost if we are to make our way safely through what the Apostle Paul called the "perilous times"2 in which we now live.

Mormonism

09:44 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

http://www.truthnet.org/Christianity/Cults/Mormon7/prologue01.jpg

The term "Mormonism" is used to describe the beliefs, doctrines, and practices of the Mormon Church (officially The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and its members.

Mormonism was founded in 1830 upon the religious doctrines set forth by the prophet Joseph Smith as he received them through divine revelation. Unlike other Christian denominations, Mormonism believes in modern prophets and ongoing revelation from God. One of the fundamental beliefs of Mormonism is that it is Christ's church "restored" to the earth. This is based on the belief that after Christ's apostles were killed, the proper authority to act in the name of Christ (the Priesthood) was no longer on the earth. Mormonism refers to this time period as the Great Apostasy. After hundreds and hundreds of years, the Heavens once again opened and the Priesthood of God was restored to Joseph Smith by the same Peter, James, and John that Christ had ordained during His ministry. With the priesthood restored, Joseph Smith was authorized to build up the Kingdom of God on earth.

Families Can Be Together Forever

09:43 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/uncyclopedia/images/0/0f/Mormon_family.jpg

How important is the family unit? Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) believe that families are the most important and foundational unit of our lives. In fact, as one modern-day apostle aptly declared, “No success can ever compensate for failure in the home.”

Perhaps you’ve wondered how you can improve the quality of life in your family. Perhaps you’ve wondered if the God-given roles of the family are viable in today’s world. With conflicting voices about the value of the traditional family, where can you turn for guidance about strengthening the bonds between parents and children or about the nature and purpose of the family, motherhood, fatherhood, parenting, and gender roles?

God has not left us directionless. He has answered your questions about the nature of families in ancient and modern scripture. He has made clear the eternal nature of gender and sexuality and instructed us on the complementary roles of men and women.

Today, a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and his twelve apostles–prophets, seers, and revelators of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the world–have spelled out in a compelling Proclamation to the World the significance and eternal nature of the family.

Mormon Missionaries

Since its earliest days, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church as it is sometimes called, has been a proselyting church, sending out missionaries to all parts of the world. Missionary work is constantly talked about in Mormon congregations, with Church members encouraged to share the gospel with their friends and neighbors.

The LDS Church has perhaps the most active missionary program of any world church. As of December 31, 2004, there were in excess of 51,000 full-time missionaries serving around the world at any given time without pay.

Missionary work is a fundamental principle of the Church, and has become one of the most readily identifiable characteristics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The darks suits and white shirts of male missionaries, called Elders, biking or walking two by two is a recognizable image on the streets of cities both large and small throughout the world. Female missionaries, who also go forth two by two, are called Sisters. All missionaries have been assigned by Church headquarters to their area of work, which can be in any part of the world where governments allow them to preach. They contribute to their own support for up to two years, frequently learning another language.

Formal Missionary Service

The formal missionary program for the Church is responsible for sending out over 56,000 missionaries to approximately 330 organized missions around the world. Mormon missionaries are a common sight in many areas, biking, going door to door, talking to people on the street, or doing service in communities small and large. These young men, typically 19 to 24 years old, are not the only missionaries that are fielded by the Church. There are missionaries who are old, young, male, female, proselyting, and service oriented. Missionary service can be full-time, like the young men and young women who proselyte and preach the Gospel in places far from their home, or it can be part-time in the missionary's own local community. These part-time missions are often call stake missions, since they are done within the local church administrative area called a stake. A stake is similar to a diocese in the Catholic Church.

Young Missionaries

In 1974, then Mormon prophet, President Spencer W. Kimball, issued a call to all young men of the Church, calling them to serve full-time missions. The members responded and number of young men and women serving missions doubled in a few short years, and continued to grow thereafter until today when an average of 55,000 missionaries are proselyting in any given year.

Mormon missionary efforts, however, have had a long history. In 1830, not long after Joseph Smith had published the Book of Mormon and established the Church, the first missionaries were sent out. Samuel Smith, Joseph Smith's brother, was the first missionary. He took the newly printed Book of Mormon and began preaching in the regions of upstate New York. Through this mission, many important future leaders of the Church were converted, including the second President and Prophet of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young.

Since that time, no matter how severe the circumstances, or fierce the persecution, the Church has continued to send out missionaries to all corners of the globe. This fulfills the prophesy of Jeremiah when he said:

Missions — Proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ

09:09 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

http://oneyearbibleimages.com/holy_one_israel.jpg

. . . to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.

An invitation to "come unto Christ" is the mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"Therefore, go ye into all the world; and unto whatsoever place ye cannot go ye shall send, that the testimony may go from you into all the world unto every creature" (Doctrine and Covenants 84:62).

"The joys and blessings of serving a full-time mission are so personally sacred, they are hard to express adequately. Thirty-five years after I served my first mission, I received a letter from a family whom I had taught but did not baptize. The letter shared that their family of four little children whom I once knew now consisted of four temple marriages, three full-time missionaries, three bishops, a Relief Society president, and a dozen grandchildren maturing and developing in the gospel. You can well imagine the thrill and joy I received knowing that I had helped to find them and to teach them the gospel of Jesus Christ." — Elder Earl C. Tingey, April 1998 General Conference.

Shortly after the Church was organized in April 1830, the first formal missionary activity began. A brother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Samuel H. Smith, traveled through neighboring towns in New York with copies of the newly published Book of Mormon.

Today there are over 52,000 missionaries serving in 348 missions (reported as of December 2007).

Each mission is an ecclesiastical unit of the Church in a designated geographic area and is presided over by a mission president who serves full-time for three years. Each missionary serves for up to two years. This service is voluntary with missionaries and their families generally pay the costs of serving.

Missionaries use the scriptures (Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price) to teach persons interested in the Church. Missionaries also use a Church publication, "Preach my Gospel" to guide their efforts.
