Overcome the "Natural Man"

King Benjamin taught to his people: "For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father". (see Mosiah 3:19).

He explained that this man will keep in this condiction "unless he yields to the influence of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive , meek, humble, patient, loving, willing to submit themselves to whatever the Lord think you should inflict, as a child doth submit to his father. "

Elder Orson Pratt,
who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, taught: "The more people become righteous, are most qualified to love others and bring you happiness. A wicked man is not capable of nurturing great love for his wife. " (The Seer [1853-1854]

The Restoration Of Truth

09:26 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

http://www.ksl.com/emedia/slc/657/65762/6576240.jpg

God is your Father in Heaven. He knows you personally. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and your Savior. His life and teachings are the way to peace and happiness.

God knows you personally and loves you more than you can comprehend. He wants you to be happy now and always. To accomplish this purpose, Heavenly Father has provided a plan called the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Son of God; His teachings are the way to peace in life and joy for eternity.

As part of His plan, God has followed a simple pattern from the beginning of the world. He chooses a prophet (like Noah or Moses) to teach the gospel and lead the people. Sadly, most of God’s children have disregarded, disobeyed, and rejected His prophets.

As promised, Heavenly Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to earth. Jesus Christ lived a perfect, sinless life. He established His Church, taught His gospel, and performed many miracles. Incredibly, even Jesus Christ was rejected. Following His death, many people began to drift away from or distort Christ’s true teachings. As a result, God withdrew His authority to direct the Church that Christ had established.

Our loving Father in Heaven is the “same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (see Hebrews 13:8). As in ancient times, He has followed His simple pattern in our day. He has again established the gospel of Jesus Christ on the earth through a prophet. This prophet whom the Lord called to restore God’s truth is named Joseph Smith. The evidence of this Restoration is found in the Book of Mormon, which you can read, ponder, and pray about.

God continues to speak His words and reveal His truth in our day through a living prophet. If you ask your Heavenly Father in prayer, He can confirm the truth of this to you.

Mormon Commandments

09:25 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

Staying faithful to the end to keep the commandments

As mentioned above, faith, repentance, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost (i.e. "The First Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel") are not enough to guarantee salvation; rather, after these initial steps a continuous, life-long commitment is required for continued personal progress. This life-long commitment, which Mormons call "enduring to the end," includes both inward and outward changes. Inwardly, we must seek to change our hearts, to align our wills with the will of God. This comes as we develop faith in Jesus Christ. Outwardly, we must show forth good works by choosing to keep the commandments God has revealed through ancient and modern prophets and apostles. Rather than trying to find a religion that "best fits" our lifestyle or "picking and choosing" which religious directives we'll accept (i.e. religion a la cart), we should instead actively seek to discover God's will and to do it. God blesses those who endure to the end by striving both to develop faith in Christ and to keep His commandments.

Ensign Magazine

THE

OF THE CHURCH OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS ...

...commonly shortened to Ensign (pronounced /ˈɛnsaɪn/), is an official periodical of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The magazine was first issued in January 1971 along with the correlated New Era (for youth) and the Friend (for children), all of which replaced the older church publications Improvement Era, Relief Society Magazine, The Instructor, and the Millennial Star. Unlike some of its predecessors, the Ensign contains no advertisements.

As an official church publication, the Ensign contains faith-promoting and proselytizing information, stories, sermons, and often apostolic scholarship.

Semiannually, the Ensign gives a full report of the proceedings of the annual and semi-annual general conferences of the church. These issues contain the full sermons and business of the conferences, as well as a current photographic list of the highest officers of the LDS Church, referred to as the general authorities.

The full text and page layout of every issue of the magazine is available on the church's web site. Each issue since January 2001 is also available in PDF format.

Below see one cover of the magazine, of months and years ago (January 1971).

Manual 2; Supplement from ''Today''
by Lance B. Wickman

Three weeks ago, I stepped into Yesterday. In that moment, I rediscovered Today. And it is about Today that I wish to speak.

A Church assignment had carried me across the vast reaches of the Pacific to the land of Vietnam. For me, this was more than a flight over an ocean. It was a step back in time. More than 40 years ago, I had served on the battlefields of that land as an infantry officer. Etched in my mind over those intervening decades were memories of that place, its people, and my comrades in arms with whom I had served. Jacob once wrote, "Our lives passed away like . . . unto us a dream" (Jacob 7:26). So it had been for me. And now I was returning from my hall of memories to that place of memory after a near half-century. My Church business concluded, I determined to once again visit those fields of desperate struggle. Accompanied by my dear wife, I made the pilgrimage.

Families Can Be Together Forever

09:43 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/uncyclopedia/images/0/0f/Mormon_family.jpg

How important is the family unit? Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) believe that families are the most important and foundational unit of our lives. In fact, as one modern-day apostle aptly declared, “No success can ever compensate for failure in the home.”

Perhaps you’ve wondered how you can improve the quality of life in your family. Perhaps you’ve wondered if the God-given roles of the family are viable in today’s world. With conflicting voices about the value of the traditional family, where can you turn for guidance about strengthening the bonds between parents and children or about the nature and purpose of the family, motherhood, fatherhood, parenting, and gender roles?

God has not left us directionless. He has answered your questions about the nature of families in ancient and modern scripture. He has made clear the eternal nature of gender and sexuality and instructed us on the complementary roles of men and women.

Today, a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and his twelve apostles–prophets, seers, and revelators of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the world–have spelled out in a compelling Proclamation to the World the significance and eternal nature of the family.

Mormon Missionaries

Since its earliest days, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church as it is sometimes called, has been a proselyting church, sending out missionaries to all parts of the world. Missionary work is constantly talked about in Mormon congregations, with Church members encouraged to share the gospel with their friends and neighbors.

The LDS Church has perhaps the most active missionary program of any world church. As of December 31, 2004, there were in excess of 51,000 full-time missionaries serving around the world at any given time without pay.

Missionary work is a fundamental principle of the Church, and has become one of the most readily identifiable characteristics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The darks suits and white shirts of male missionaries, called Elders, biking or walking two by two is a recognizable image on the streets of cities both large and small throughout the world. Female missionaries, who also go forth two by two, are called Sisters. All missionaries have been assigned by Church headquarters to their area of work, which can be in any part of the world where governments allow them to preach. They contribute to their own support for up to two years, frequently learning another language.

Formal Missionary Service

The formal missionary program for the Church is responsible for sending out over 56,000 missionaries to approximately 330 organized missions around the world. Mormon missionaries are a common sight in many areas, biking, going door to door, talking to people on the street, or doing service in communities small and large. These young men, typically 19 to 24 years old, are not the only missionaries that are fielded by the Church. There are missionaries who are old, young, male, female, proselyting, and service oriented. Missionary service can be full-time, like the young men and young women who proselyte and preach the Gospel in places far from their home, or it can be part-time in the missionary's own local community. These part-time missions are often call stake missions, since they are done within the local church administrative area called a stake. A stake is similar to a diocese in the Catholic Church.

Young Missionaries

In 1974, then Mormon prophet, President Spencer W. Kimball, issued a call to all young men of the Church, calling them to serve full-time missions. The members responded and number of young men and women serving missions doubled in a few short years, and continued to grow thereafter until today when an average of 55,000 missionaries are proselyting in any given year.

Mormon missionary efforts, however, have had a long history. In 1830, not long after Joseph Smith had published the Book of Mormon and established the Church, the first missionaries were sent out. Samuel Smith, Joseph Smith's brother, was the first missionary. He took the newly printed Book of Mormon and began preaching in the regions of upstate New York. Through this mission, many important future leaders of the Church were converted, including the second President and Prophet of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young.

Since that time, no matter how severe the circumstances, or fierce the persecution, the Church has continued to send out missionaries to all corners of the globe. This fulfills the prophesy of Jeremiah when he said:

Mormon missionaries can be seen on the streets of hundreds of major cities in the world as well as in thousands of smaller communities. They serve in pairs, teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and baptizing believers into the Church. Missionary work in the Church is voluntary and missionaries fund their own missions.

Preach My Gospel - A Guide to Missionary Service

09:14 Posted by: Mormon Missionary 0 comments

Preach My Gospel is a guide to missionary service that is published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its full-time missionaries, Mission Presidents, Ward Missionaries and members. It replaces an old teaching format, which was called the Uniform System for Teaching the Gospel, and focuses more on teaching by the Spirit. Teaching by the Spirit means seeking guidance from the Holy Ghost to teach; the idea is that the teachings will be catered to each person who is seeking the truth through divine guidance. The belief is that God knows each of His children and can guide His servants to say and teach what is best for each individual.

However, the guide still contains material which should be actively taught. Chapter 3 of Preach My Gospel concisely describes all of the doctrine that the missionaries are to teach to those learning about the Church. The missionaries are responsible for knowing the doctrine and being continually preparing to teach it. They can choose the order that this material is taught to serve the needs of each individual. This is a change from the missionary discussions which were usually taught in order to each investigator."
